Faces of the community

Artist: Marco Marcon, Rodney Glick

Asset Type: Photographic manipulation

Year of Work: 2006

Location: Cockburn Train Station

Provenance: City of Cockburn

Description: Commissioned by the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia.

Each image is an amalgamation of male and female faces of Cockburn residents, an overlay of 250 people selected from the surrounding area, creating the ‘average face’ of the Cockburn resident.

Minister for Transport Rita Saffioti described them as ‘Creepy”.

It was removed in 2019 over safety concerns. In December 2019 the community voted on what they would like to see installed in their place, with a 43 per cent majority opting for a new piece of artwork.

The Magic Tree

Artist: Coral Lowry

Year of Work: 2006

Location: Windsor Park, South Perth - Near Heritage House

Description: “The idea behind the ‘Magic Tree’ was that it had been planted in the Park and, over time, morphed into a variety of animals,” she said. “This is no ordinary tree, as stemming from the tail-like trunk are leaves that certainly require a closer look, due to the different part of various animals that can be seen within each leaf. “I wanted the Tree to be a guessing game where children could try and work out the different types and parts of the animals embodied in it.”
