Albany-Kinjarling Silo Mural

Artist: Yok, Sheryo

Asset Type: Mural

Year of Work: 2018

Location: Albany-Kinjarling

Provenance: City of Albany-Kinjarling

Description: Western Australia’s southernmost port city has a wealth of urban art to delight the visitor.

There’s the ruby sea dragon (Phyllopteryx dewysea) on massive silos by The Yok & Sheryo down at the port, and then in the city centre, a variety of murals by local and international artists.

The first wave of this creative takeover began in April 2016 with urban artists from Europe, Tunisia, Australia and the States getting together with local talent to give buildings and alleyways around York Street a makeover as part of FORM’s annual PUBLIC festival of urban art.

Then in 2018, the dynamic duo The Yok & Sheryo took on the CBH Group grain silos, and referenced Albany’s pristine environment and sea-life with one very happy-looking marine creature (and local resident), the ruby sea dragon.

Newdegate Silo Mural

Artist: Brenton See

Asset Type: Mural

Year of Work: 2018

Location: Newdegate

Provenance: Town of Newdegate

Description: Newdegate. Salt lake and wildflower country. Wheat and barley country.

In May 2018, faced with a row of CBH silos high above his head, Perth artist Brenton See conquered his fear of heights to paint four huge murals which draw inspiration directly from the flora and fauna of the area.

One features a local resident, the Western Bearded Dragon (Pomona minor minor), namesake of the nearby Dragon Rocks Nature Reserve. Another local, the Red-tailed phascogale (Phascogale calura), a rare marsupial found only in the Wheatbelt, features in another. Only 10 cm long, this creature can jump an incredible twenty times its own length.

On the neighbouring panel, Brenton has painted the profile of a Malleefowl (Leipoa ocellata), the bird symbol of the Wheatbelt and a regular of the Newdegate area.

The final panel is an emblematic depiction of the region, says Brenton. It features a shape like a drop of water, half-white, half-teal. The white represents the salt lakes; and the teal represents the freshwater lakes and rain. In the background are coloured squares showing how the land appears from above: green for the bushland areas and brown, orange and red for the dirt and rocks.

Cowara Mural

Image source Margaret River Art Trails

Artist: Brenton See

Asset Type: Mural

Year of Work: 2018

Location: Pioneer Park

Provenance: Shire of Augusta Margaret River

Description: Cowaramup means ‘place of the cowara’, referring to the purple-crowned lorikeets, a swift, screeching bird that can still be found foraging in the treetops.

The fast-flying birds can be difficult to spot but are often sighted in nearby karri forest, nesting in the hollows of old trees.

This magnificent, larger than life mural pays homage to the traditional owners of the land, the Wadandi people and their connection to country, animals and flora.

Provenance: Shire of Augusta Margaret River

Description: This sculpture celebrates the town of Cowaramup and its namesake, the cowara bird.

The idea was conceived by Nicola from the Black Sheep Deli (now closed) and sculptor Alan Meyburgh who wanted visitors to be aware that the town was named after a beautiful bird and not a cow.

Cowara is the name given by the Wadandi people for the purple-crowned lorikeet, a small bird found high in the crowns of trees in nearby forest.

The Adnate Mega Mural

Image source The Adnate, Art Series Hotels

Artist: Matt Adnate

Asset Type: Mural

Year of Work: 2017-2019

Location: 900 Hay Street, Perth 6000

Provenance: City of Perth

Description: The imposing 27-storey ‘Mega Mural’ on the west-facing side of the hotel is the largest artwork Matt has painted on a building and, once completed, will feature faces which represent the cultural history and community of Perth.

This, along with a ‘Laneway Mural’, which spans more than 50m long and features multiple portraits from Matt and a collaboration with a local Indigenous artist, and Matt’s interior ‘Staircase Mural’, will completely transform the hotel both inside and out.

“I see this hotel as a beautiful canvas to tell a story about Perth’s cultural and community connection through portraiture and traditional elements,” Matt said.

“My Mega Mural will feature three large-scale portraits. It will represent the past through the cultural representation in the subject’s dressing elements, the present with contemporary faces, and the future as the subjects are the youth of today.

“What excites me most about this collaboration with Art Series is the opportunity to capture the stories and emotions of my subjects and to share them with a new audience in the west.

“I’ve always held a personal connection towards the First Nation people I paint. Whether it be a connection to country or a strong emphasis on spirituality, I believe we have a lot to learn from these people.”

Sharon Peterkin Footpath Mural

Artist: Sharon Peterkin

Asset Type: Mural

Year of Work: 2018

Location: 31 Old Perth Road, footpath and power pole

Provenance: Town of Bassendean

Description:  “When I visited the proposed site of this footpath mural...there was a very sweet little cafe there with people just hanging out with friends and their kids.

“It struck me that we are all also in such a hurry and with the painting being on the footpath, I thought it was a wonderful opportunity to convey a message of hey...lets all just slow down a bit and smell the flowers. I put a little quote in the painted book in the hope that people will stop a moment to read it and take their time to view the mural. It seems to have worked as I get lots of feedback just how much the community has fallen in love with their footpath mural.” -Sharon Peterkin
