De Vlamingh Sundial Memorial

Image source Eugene Scrivener (Museum of Perth)

Artist: Albert De Boer, Smith Sculptors (Joan Walsh-Smith, Charles Smith)

Asset Type: Monument

Year of Work: 2007

Location: Near the Narrows Interchange on Riverside Drive

Provenance: City of Perth

Description: Designed through a collaboration between Artforms founder Albert De Boer and Smith Sculptors, the De Vlamingh Memorial Sundial is a custom-made ferritic stainless steel structure. It is engineered to record time simultaneously in Perth, Western Australia, and the Netherlands, symbolising the connection between the two regions. The sundial features intricate engravings of an ancient world map and the trade routes of early Dutch traders, reflecting the extensive reach and influence of Dutch exploration.

Surrounding the sundial are premium granite bollards, each etched with laser engravings that detail the journeys of great explorers such as Dirk Hartog and Willem de Vlamingh. These bollards provide educational insights, enhancing the sundial’s role as an informative and commemorative piece of public art.

Originally situated next to the Bell Tower in Perth, the memorial was displaced in 2012 due to the development of Elizabeth Quay. After several years in storage, the Perth Council decided to relocate the sundial to a new site near the Narrows Interchange on Riverside Drive

Solidarity Park Rock

Artist: Unknown

Asset Type: Monument, Plaque

Year of Work: 1997

Location: Solidarity Park, cnr Parliament Place and Harvest Terrace

Provenance: City of Perth

Description: Solidarity Park commemorates the union`s struggle against "The Third Wave" of industrial reform in West Australia.

Solidarity Park, formerly known as The Workers’ Embassy, is a landscaped park containing five memorial structures and is used as a place for remembrance, public protest, recreation and as a thoroughfare to Parliament House. All structures in the park were constructed in 1997 during the six month trade union occupation of the site as part of the Third Wave Campaign.

The Third Wave is regarded as one of the most significant labour struggles in West Australian history when the Liberal Government introduced legislation that would significantly restrict the ability of unions to protect members and the general community from unfair and exploitative employment practices.

On 29 April 1997, 30,000 unionists and community supporters marched on Parliament House to demand the scrapping of these unjust laws. The Government rejected this demand. So, on 1 May - May Day - the site was pegged and legally claimed by unionists under the provisions of the Mining Act.

The unions co-ordinated a 6 month long, 24 hour a day, protest occupation of this site in defiance of the pending legislation and attempts by the Government to require union and community protesters ‘move on’. They refused to do so and, although the legislation was passed, it was never fully enacted for fear of further union backlash. The change of government in 2001 saw the laws repealed.

Yagan

Artist: Robert C. Hitchcock

Asset Type: Memorial

Year of Work: 1984

Location: Heirisson Island, Western End, South of Causeway

Provenance: City of Perth

Description: The sculpture commemorates Aboriginal tribal leader, Yagan.

Yagan was an Aboriginal patriot of the Nyungar tribe who resisted the invasion of the European settlers but was eventually captured. He was exiled to Carnac Island and treated as a prisoner of war. He escaped and returned to the mainland and there was a reward for his capture.

On July 11, 1833, with a group of Nyungar, Yagan approached two young shepherds he knew, James and William Keats, and asked them for flour. Recognising Yagan and keen for the reward, William, when he saw the chance, levelled his musket at Yagan behind his back and shot him dead. Both brothers then fled, but William was caught and speared to death. After his death, Yagan`s head was hacked off from his body and taken to English museums.

In 1894 the head was passed on to the Liverpool City Museum, where it was exhibited until 1964. It was then buried in the Everton Cemetery. In 1990 a request by the Western Australian Nyoongah community was put to the British Government to exhume the head. Permission was finally granted and 164 years after it was sent to England, Yagan`s head was brought back to Australia for burial according to Nyoongah custom.
