Lucy Vader

Unsurprisingly for someone whose family has farmed for generations, Lucy Vader conveys a landscape that has been both seen and felt.

She applies paint in thick, sumptuous layers blurring the boundary between abstraction and representation.

Stand close to one of Vader’s works and her brushstrokes draw you into a richly textured world of deep colours – green, yellow, red and blue. Move away from the canvas and wide, grassy paddocks emerge, frequently populated by sheep – golden and camouflaged against parched yellow land, or with bright white fleeces that contrast with rain-restored grass. Vader’s sheep graze, run off or just look inscrutable, contributing a light-heartedness for which she has become known.

Lucy is also a sculpture with several pieces chosen for Sculpture by the Sea

James Giddy is a multidisciplinary artist who has gainedrecognition for his large-scale public art works both domestically andinternationally. Based in Boorloo (Perth), Giddy was initially recognisedthrough mural work for Form WA’s Public Project (2015) and completed a Bachelorof Fine Arts at Curtin University (2016 Degree Show).

With foundations in watercolour painting, Giddy pays homageto contrast and composition, looking to the natural environment and his nearsurroundings for inspiration. The immediacy and sense-of-place achieved by theFrench motif of ‘en plein air’ painting, translates through a lot of his muraland studio work.

Giddy’s works encourage the audience to question and bringtheir own contextual understanding to the composition, whilst providing aplatform of familiarity in the subject and its action. Through these dynamicsof a subject and its ground, Giddy often visits themes concerning the every-dayand the common civilian, whilst using the public reach of his mural work tolook at environmental awareness and conservation, drawing focus to nature in anurban environment or on a man-made structure

PAUL CAPORN

Lives and works in Perth Australia.

Paul Caporn has exhibited nationally and internationally in over 40 group and 9 solo exhibitions, making art primarily in the realms of sculpture, animation, video and installation.

His work often engages with themes that circulate notions of industry and science. This can involve a nostalgic play, dealing with technologies in what is often a low-tech manner, describing the relationships between people, memory, time, space and places. This play is often negotiated through an uncanny sensibility, where familiar domestic or industrial objects are brought together in a way that feels both comfortable and unfamiliar.

Work featured in group exhibitions includeThe Collective, Vasse Felix, Margaret River (2015),Tropheum, Fremantle Arts Centre, Fremantle (2014),Worth Its Weight in Gold, Moana Perth (2014) and in the Atelier Mondial Opening, Basel Switzerland (2014).

He has been the recipient of various grants from Department of Culture and the Arts WA (including a Visual Arts Craft Strategy Mid-Career Fellowship in 2008) and the Australia Council. In 2014 Caporn spent six months based in Basel Switzerland as recipient of the ArtSource Christoph Merian Foundation Basel Artists Residency, and in 2004 undertook an Asialink Visual Arts Residency at Taipei Artists Village, Taiwan.

In addition to exhibition work, Caporn has participated in several public art, collaborative and residency projects.

Dune Haggar

“Hi my name is Dune, I’m a graphic artist, who loves creating artworks both on paper and on products. My final form is collaborating with great companies and people to get my artwork out into the real world. I’ve gravitated towards the gaming, esports, music, apparel and skating sector but I am happy to collaborate on anything.

Yes Dune is my real name…no really, it is.

I’m named after the book series by Frank Herbert. Its Sci-Fi landscape suits my weird worlds I create. I reside in Dunsborough Western Australia, I try to not tell too many people how cool it is down Southwest so shhh.

I am a graphic arts who loves drawing, painting, creating madness on canvas, computers, gaming gear, skateboards, beer cans, wine bottles, guitars, promotional material… anything. I love creating with markers, paint brushes, vinyl transfers, toys, pixels, vector and chaos. When I am not drawing, painting, designing I am playing guitar or making music.

I live for collaborating with future thinking companies and really love to push a product into the stratosphere. Be it a custom product for an event, a dream guitar, custom skateboard or a fully siiiick cut ‘n’ sew hoodie for grandma. Sometimes the only perceived extra added value you can add to a product… is art, uniqueness, character and creativity! I have enjoyed working on products by Kidrobot, SteelSeries, Fortress Melbourne, Aftershock PC, Intel and Colonial Brewing Co. Every time adding my own character and eye catching quirkiness.”

Peter Zappa

Peter Zappa is a professional artist specialising in sculptures.

Peter’s interest is perception. He explores perception by taking familiar objects and themes and reconfiguring them into whimsical variations of the original. The reimagined sculptures have an uncannily plausible appearance.

Peter’s favoured medium is metal, specifically stainless steel which he hand crafts in a uniquely recognisable style. Peter has been working as a professional sculptor since 2006 when he completed a degree in Fine arts at Curtin University at the age of 48 as a mature aged student. Peter commenced an Honours program in sculpture in 2007 but left academia to pursue his passion as a practicing artist, preferring the creative atmosphere of his workshop in preference to an institution.

Perhaps it was the 25 years working with his hands as a plumber that drew Peter towards sculpture or maybe it started as a boy watching, entranced as his father, Guglielmo-also known as Bill to his friends, magically worked metal with a hammer, fire and anvil in the back garage on the rare occasions when Bill’s chisels needed re-sharpening.

Peter’s father had acquired his blacksmithing skills as part of his own apprenticeship as an idraulico or plumber as a boy back in Italy in the 1920’s.

But Peter likes to think there is another possible reason why he became a sculptor, it’s through his Italian heritage. Peter’s family originates from Sondalo a small town located up in the northern Italian Alps near the border to Switzerland. Sondalo is also only 30 Kilometres away from the Swiss town of Borgononvo, the birth place of the sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Perhaps there’s something in the alpine water?

Rodney Glick

Rodney Glick is an Australian artist currently living and working in Indonesia whose sculptures combine real, spiritual and imagined realms.

Glick’s practice is intriguing on many levels – from his ingenuity with material, rigorous exploration of subject matter, intelligence and wicked sense of humour.

The people in Rodney Glick’s sculptures are people he knows, but he calls them ‘everyone’, and then assigns a number for the practical purpose of distinguishing the works from one another.

Dressed in contemporary clothing and with physiques that align them with people in our own lives, Glick’s subjects are like anyone we might pass in the street or sit next to on a plane. They are anonymous, ordinary people, not above us in any social or spiritual sphere, and not below either. They are simultaneously familiar and foreign. This gap between the known and the unknown is increased by the way Glick has depicted his ‘Everyones’ with reference to Hindu and Buddhist iconography.

His use of Eastern religious art in the Western contemporary realm pushes the work into a contentious space of questioning around what is sacred, and what is right for use.

Tim Howe grew up creating artworks inspired by the southwest’s rich surf and music scene.

Originally a graphic designer by trade, a chance encounter led to the gift of an old school tattoo machine.

This opened doors to the tattoo industry, which since 2007 has been Tim’s medium of choice. Tim has showcased artwork in multiple exhibitions within Australia and has several art pieces in various publications.

His artistic interests move between tattoo art and large paintings using acrylic on wood, which reflect tweaked, semi realism with a dark edge.

While working for an industrial cleaning company in October of 2015 and pursuing art as a hobby, Jack was given an opportunity to paint a mural on a business in Mandurah.
